F5 SBT Savannah kittens

August 2024

Hi everyone.

You may have noticed a huge silence and lack of update on the website (which I am now working on updating) for the past few years. I have had a break from breeding but the work backstage has remained the same.

To cut a long story short, I have had many issues with my local council and have been unable to breed any kittens for the past 2-3 years as I would be breaking the law.

New laws were brought in during 2018 (but not implemented by my local council until 2020) whereby all cat breeders must be licensed to sell animals as pets. As soon as I became aware of this, I contacted my local council to begin the process of obtaining a license. However, I was told that due to COVID, this would not be possible (as an officer could not visit the premises) and that I should apply for a license at a later date.

I then made this application in March 2021, which was a very comprehensive file that was sent by recorded delivery and was received. I was not contacted again until...

In 2022, I received a visit from an officer who turned up unannounced. He told me that there had been several reports and photographs sent from individuals that I was breeding illegally (as I didn't have a license). I was told that should I continue to breed, I would face legal action and possibly prison.

I have been breeding since 2008. I am here for all to see. I am registered with every necessary body including HMRC. I do everything by the book and declare everything. I also fully health test and go above and beyond for every single cat and kitten. I have never done anything underground or cut any corners.

This visit was followed by a continuous barrage of extremely upsetting emails and telephone conversations from the same officer. It got to the point that I refused to speak with him as he was bullying and harrassing me and causing me a huge amount of distress.

I questioned what happened to my application and I was told that the council 'accidentally closed it' though nobody thought to inform me! I was then told my someone else that I could still continue to apply and I just needed to make payment and so I did.

However, the officer investigating me then told me that because I had made this payment whilst being under investigation, I was now in much more trouble and that this had now escalated to a legal team.

This period of time and hell that I went through was the result of some jealous individuals that tried to sabotage everything that I have worked for since 2008, all the blood, sweat and tears. And unfortunately I was also met with an officer that wanted to make an example of me.

So, I went to the management and threatened legal action of my own and low and behold, the whole case was dropped and I was assigned another officer/inspector. I also received an apology for the treatment I had received.

This new inspector visited me and he was absolutely wonderful. He was extremely pleased with our facilities and even asked for tips and tricks for his own cat. That day, I was given my license immediately and awarded higher standards and a four star rating (five stars are only possibly if you have previously had a license).

During this long period of not being allowed to breed, I have not had any income and it has been a huge financial and emotional burden. The costs and outgoings (other than keeping kittens) has not just remained the same but actually increased. Vet costs alone have doubled! I have suffered a huge loss of earnings which I depend on to run the catteries and care for the cats. Of course I found this money elsewhere and made sacrifices including my mortgage!

I would also like to point out that on several occasions, I demonstrated the dangers of leaving entire females in season without being mated. The risk of pyometra and the risks to their lives. This was completely ignored. In my opinion, this was never an animal welfare case in the eyes of the council.

So that is the short version of where I have been and what has been happening to me over the last 2-3 years. When I say this is the short version, it really is!

I plan to move on now and pick up the pieces. I hope to have my first new litters late 2024. Please keep an eye on the planned matings page for further details.

I thought I would share a few photographs here of my Savannah keeper girls for 2021. Sadly I have had to retire three of my adult queens in a matter of months for differing reasons so it is important to keep the lines going with new girls. This does however mean that I will probably need to bring in a new boy to prevent the lines getting too closely related.
